Ergonomic desk setup to prevent pain

A surprising amount of the pain we treat in clinic traces back to desk setup. The good news is that most of it is preventable with a few practical adjustments.

Monitor Height

Your screen's top edge should sit roughly at eye level. A monitor positioned too low forces your neck into a forward-leaning posture for hours at a time.

Chair Support

Your lower back needs proper support to maintain its natural curve. If your chair doesn't provide this, a small lumbar cushion can make a meaningful difference.

Keyboard and Mouse Position

Your elbows should rest at roughly 90 degrees, with wrists in a neutral position — not bent up or down — to avoid strain building up in the shoulders and forearms.

Movement Breaks

Even a perfect setup can't fully offset hours of stillness. Standing, stretching, or walking for a few minutes every hour significantly reduces cumulative strain.

Common Mistake: "Good Posture" All Day

Rigidly holding one "correct" posture for hours is itself a strain pattern. The healthiest approach is regularly changing position, not finding one perfect pose.

Our approach: If desk-related pain has become a recurring issue, we assess your specific movement patterns and build a plan that addresses both the workstation and the underlying muscle imbalances. Our Birmingham physiotherapy and pain management teams work together on cases like this.
